About Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, in Texas State of the United States, is located on the coast of the Corpus Christi Bay, which opens into the Gulf of Mexico. The city, which is a small settlement, stands out with its holiday tourism and student population. The city is known in the state as the 'Texas Riviera' or 'The Sparkling City by the Sea'. Corpus Christi means 'the Body of Christ' in Latin. Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda named the city as such in 1519 as he discovered the gulf and its surroundings, which the present city was built upon, on a feast day.

The city is in a crucial position for the United States Defense Industry, as Corpus Christi hosts Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi Army Depot and US Coast Guard Air Station. The Corpus Christi Army Depot is the world's largest helicopter repair center. There are a large number of civilian employees in military establishments. On the other hand, the city hosts the fifth largest port of the United States. The port is predominantly used for trade of petroleum and agricultural products. Tourism, oil and petrochemicals hold the first place in the local economy of the city. Corpus Christi, Texas's eighth largest city, reflects the harmony of different groups in terms of social culture. The vast majority of the city's residents are Hispanic community members; the rest is composed of students, cowboys, surfers, and those working in the military bases and the oil industry.

Built during World War II and anchored in Corpus Christi Bay since 2003, the US Lexington War Ship, along with its war museum, constitutes the city's most attractive tourist destination. Texas State Aquarium, Asian Cultures Museum, Heritage Park, Texas Surf Museum, Padre and Mustang are among the other popular attractions. Summers are long and hot and winters are short and warm in the city, where humid subtropical climate is effective. Corpus Christi International Airport is located 9 kilometers west of the city.
