About Kardjali
Kardjali, in Southeastern Bulgaria, is located on the ridge of the East Rhodope Mountains, on the banks of the Arda River. Kardjali is located 259 kilometers from Sofia, 90 kilometers from Plovdiv, 50 kilometers from Hasköy and 15 kilometers from the ancient city of Perperikon. This city, which has been the cradle of many civilizations such as Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Slavs, Byzantines and Turks for 3000 years, has a population of about 64 thousand people. In addition, the city's economy relies on machinery, food, and tobacco industries and auto-assembly plants.
A large portion of the tobacco planted along the Arda River is also stored in this city. Kardjali Regional History Museum, one of the largest museums in southern Bulgaria, consists of approximately 40,000 exhibitions, including the ruins of Perperikon and Tatul. In this city where the train station is located, the roads extend to Hasköy and Komotini. The city has a soft, rainy Mediterranean transition climate, with many sunny days during the year. Kardjali Airport is closed to domestic and international flights. The city can be reached from Plovdiv or Sofia International Airports.
