About Haskovo
Located in southern Bulgaria, Haskovo is 225 km from the capital Sofia. It is the administrative centre of the Haskovo Province. The city is famous for its rich cultural traditions and success in arts and sciences. Due to its proximity to the Turkish and Greek borders, the city has been influenced by many cultures.
There are many cafes and restaurants immersed in greenery in the city center. Important attractions to visit in the city include the Regional History Museum, which exhibits many historic items and archaeological remains that reflect the culture of the city, and the many 19th century homes that have been transformed into museums like the Paskalev House, the Shishman House, Boyacıoğlu House, the house of Gurko, and Kirkov’s school. These structures offer a way to experience the city’s history. In addition, visitors should go to the Old Mosque, which was built in 1395, making it the oldest mosque in the city, and the Monument of the Holy Mother of God, which is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s highest monument of the Virgin Mary. Another historic structure to see is Uzundzhovo’s Church of the Assumption. Haskovo is also famous for its hot water springs.
The water temperature at these spas, which are located 15 km west of the city, can reach as high as 48.5 degrees. The Haskovo Malevo Airport is located about 8 km from the city center. It is a small airport that serves few international flights. Due to its proximity to the city taxis are widely used to reach the city center from the airport. The Plovdiv Airport is the second closest airport to Haskovo, located 80 km from the city. This airport serves many international flights. To reach Haskovo from this airport you must first take a train or bus to the Plovdiv city center and from there take an intercity bus or train to Haskovo.
