About Gabes
Gabes, the capital of Tunisia's Gabes province, has a population of about 116 thousand people according to 2004 data. The city, which stretches along the Bay of Gabes, is the sixth largest city in the country. The city is an important commercial center, in addition to being also known as the Christian episcopate center. The only university in the city is Gabes University. Gabes-Matmata International Airport, which provides air transportation to and from the city is also located here.
Gabes, one of the largest industrial cities in Tunisia, produces cement, chemical products, brick and oil refinery, mostly for chemical purposes. In the semi-arid city, there is a hot and dry summer season and a cool and arid winter season. The highest temperature value during the year is about 24 degrees Celsius in August, while the lowest temperature value is 12 degrees Celsius in January.
